As the Illinois State Police continue to investigate a fatal officer-involved shooting on the southeast side of Aurora, on Friday the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and the Plano Police Department jointly released intense bodycam footage of the incident.

“Both the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and the Plano Police Department hold integrity as one of our core department values,” Kendall County Undersheriff Bobby Richardson said in explaining the decision to release the video. “Part of having integrity is having open and transparent inspection of our actions.”

Just before 6:45pm on Friday, September 27, deputies with the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist the Plano Police Department with a report of shots fired and a home invasion in the 3800 block of Pratt Street in Plano. Upon arriving at the residence, they found 70-year-old Russell Novak, who had been shot and killed.

Police subsequently located a car believed to be associated with the incident in the area, leading to a pursuit that ended in the area of Route 34 and Eola Road in Aurora. Deputies and officers from multiple law enforcement agencies encountered an armed subject and, facing what the release indicated was a lethal threat, “engaged the subject to protect the public and themselves.”

According to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No law enforcement officers were injured.
