A Dundee man has been charged with a wide range of felonies after allegedly breaking into the St. Charles Public Works facility and stealing a utility truck, and then allegedly stealing another car and setting in on fire.

According to a St. Charles news release, on Wednesday at approximately 9:45pm a St. Charles Police Officer located a damaged and dislodged security gate at the St. Charles Public Works facility at 1405 South 7th Street. According to police, a 44-year-old male suspect had gained access to the facility by climbing over the exterior perimeter fence. Once inside the secured area, the suspect started a city-owned utility truck and drove it through the security gate, causing considerable damage. The truck was later recovered, unoccupied, in the downtown area of St. Charles.

Shortly thereafter, according to the report, another vehicle was reported stolen in the 700 block of West Main Street. It is alleged that the same suspect drove this vehicle to an unincorporated area of Kane County where he eventually set fire to it and then fled on foot.

Kane County Deputies were dispatched to the vehicle fire and ultimately located the suspect in a nearby tree line, at which point he was taken into custody and transferred to the St. Charles Police.

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges against the suspect:

  • Aggravated Possession Of A Stolen Motor Vehicle – Class 1 Felony
  • Possession Of A Stolen Motor Vehicle – Class 2 Felony
  • Arson To Personal Property- Class 2 Felony
