A Chicago man is in custody after allegedly being found with 100 grams of Fentanyl in his vehicle.
That amount of Fentanyl could produce approximately 50,000 fatal doses.
On Tuesday afternoon at around 2:25 p.m., the Kane County Special Investigation Unit (SIU) spotted a silver Nissan SUV on I-88 near Dauberman Road in Elburn, exhibiting several lane violations.
After conducting a traffic stop, officers discovered that the suspect’s driver’s license had been revoked for Driving Under the Influence, and that he had a prior conviction for the Manufacture or Delivery of a Controlled Substance.
Upon searching the vehicle, detectives discovered 100 grams of Fentanyl concealed in a large tote hidden under clothing.
The 41-year-old suspect was immediately arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver (Class X).
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, nearly 74,000 people died of Fentanyl overdoses in the United States in 2022, the latest year for which data is available. A fatal dose can be as little 2 milligrams.
