A 55-year-old Aurora man was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to intentionally setting fire to a previous residence.
Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie L. Mosser announced this week that Victor Alvarez has agreed to a sentence of 10 years of imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections in exchange for a guilty plea to the offense of residential arson, a Class 1 felony. In an unrelated plea, Alvarez pled guilty to the offenses of unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle, a Class 2 felony, and aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony. Alvarez agreed to a sentence of 4 years of imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections on those offenses, which will run concurrent to the 10 year sentence.
Judge Clint Hull accepted the plea.
According to the prosecution, on March 9, 2023, Alvarez entered a home where he had previously lived in Aurora. He threatened individuals that were present and started a fire in the home causing damage. Alvarez later stated that he started the fire because he was upset with his roommates.
Six days later, on March 15, 2023, while on a public sidewalk in Aurora, Alvarez struck a woman multiple times in the face. When a man intervened on the woman’s behalf, Alvarez stole the man’s car and fled the scene.
In addition to the prison term, Alvarez must register for 10 years in accordance with the Arson Registration Act.
In accordance with Illinois law, Alvarez is eligible for day-for-day sentencing. Alvarez receives credit for 457 days served in the Kane County jail.
