Juneteenth is the oldest nationally-celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.

From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.

“The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer.”

General Order Number 3, issued by General Gordon Granger to the people of Texas

This year, the African American Coalition of Kane County is hosting the Juneteenth Cultural Festival in Festival Park on Friday, June 15, from 1pm to 9pm.

This year’s theme, “What About the Children?” invites us to honor the diverse cultures of the African diaspora and inspire our youth to embrace their heritage with pride.

Kid Zone EXPANSION – This year, the festival is expanding activities for children.
The expanded Kids Zone promises endless fun for children of all ages, from interactive games to reading corner to creative activities.

Entertainment – As Mase likes to say, make sure you “Breathe, Stretch, Shake, and Let it go” this year as entertainers like DJ Dre, We In The Basement and so many more performers bring the energy to bring a head bop, hand clap or full out dance to the festival. Bring your lawn chair or a blanket and find your space to enjoy the music and more.

The event will include music, performances, art exhibitions, storytelling, vendors, food, history, and entertainment for the whole family.
