On Monday, May 27th, Geneva Township will observe Memorial Day by paying tribute to the brave individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our nation. This unique and longstanding tradition places ceremonial 3’ X 5’ American flags at the graves of 15 military personnel who were killed in action and laid to rest in Geneva Township cemeteries. Those killed in action served in the Civil War, Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, and the Vietnam War.
Additionally, in remembrance of township citizens who lost their lives in service but are buried elsewhere, a poignant tribute of 23 flags will be displayed at the plaza in front of the Geneva Township Center. To honor all others who have served and sacrificed, a post flag will be raised and then lowered to half-staff in front of the Center.
Legion Color Guard will perform a three volley rifle salute followed by the bugle call Taps. The Center will be open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 a.m. on Memorial Day for township residents and Center members who wish to observe this very moving dawn tribute. Refreshments will be served in the Center dining room after the tribute. Then at approximately 11:00 a.m. the American Legion will again hold a service at the war memorial in Wheeler Park in front of the Center following the Geneva Memorial Day parade. The Center will reopen at 10:30 a.m. Township seniors and Center members where coffee and pastries will be served until 11:30 a.m.
