A 15-year-old Naperville student has been identified as one of the deceased following an avalanche in Switzerland Monday.
Aleksas Beiga, a freshman at Naperville Central High School, was on spring break when he died during an April 1 avalanche near a ski resort in Zermatt, Switzerland.
Alexas was the son of former Lithuainian Olymipic swimmer Nerijus Beiga, and is also survived by his mother Sonata, his sister Eva, his grandmothers Marija and Birute, and his uncles Edvinas, Marius and Gediminas.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family by a family friend, Neringa Mockus.
“Aleksas was more than just a son, grandson, brother, and friend: he was a ray of sunshine that brightened every room he entered,” Mockus wrote. “His vivacity knew no bounds, and his zest for life was unparalleled.”
“Whether he was diving into the swimming pool, racing down the trails on his bike, or carving up the slopes on his skis, Aleksas approached every moment with enthusiasm and passion,” she added.
Visitation will be held at Blessed Jurgis Matulaitis Lithuanian Catholic Mission at 14911 E 127th Street in Lemont in Thursday from 3:00pm – 9:00pm, followed by the funeral on Friday at 10:00am.
