Joseph J. Charron, 68, a former monk and teacher at Marmion Academy, has agreed to a sentence of 30 months probation and 180 days of imprisonment in exchange for a guilty plea to the offense of aggravated battery, a Class 3 Felony.

Judge Julie Yetter accepted the plea.

During the time the victim was in high school at Marmion Academy, and between the ages of 15 and 17, Charron made contacts of an insulting and provoking nature with him.

Judge Yetter heard victim impact statements from the victim and his parents detailing the effects of Charron’s course of conduct with him.

“The victim in this case showed tremendous courage in coming forward,” said Kane County First Assistant State’s Attorney Christine Bayer. “My heartfelt thanks to him for his patience and additional courage throughout this entire process culminating with the plea and ability to speak about the effect the crime had upon him.”

As terms of his probation, Charron must complete the recommendations of the sex offender evaluation, is to have no contact with the victim, only supervised contact with minors under 18, and must comply with the orders in the Civil No Contact Order.

At the time of sentencing, Charron has paid $35,257.75 in restitution and has another $2,799 in fines, fees and assessments to pay.

Charron is currently living in Wisconsin with permission of the court. He may reside in another state upon approval of the Interstate Compact Commission. Charron receives credit for 695 days of home confinement, where he had been held since May 2022.
