Update: Officials from the Kane Couty Sheriff’s Office have released the identity of the motorcycle driver killed during Monday’s crash at Kaneland High School.

Sixty-year-old John B. Smith of Maple Park was killed when the Harley-Davidson motorcycle he was riding was struck by a Suburu driven by a 16-year old female student from Sugar Grove. The accident occured when the student exited out of Kaneland High School parking lot, driving eastbound onto Keslinger Road, and then struck the Harley- Davidson motorcycle, which was traveling westbound on Keslinger Road.

The student rendered aid to the severly-injured Smith until police arrived, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.

At this time, traffic citations have been issued to the student for the following:

    • Failure to avoid an accident
    • Disobeying a stop sign

Collection of evidence has been taken with the assistance of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office Evidence Division and Kane County Drone Team for further analysis. If there is an indication of impairment, the potential for an increase in charges may be forthcoming.

Video footage of the crash has also been collected.
