A Carpentersville man was sentenced to 23 years in prison in return for a guilty plea to the offense of home invasion, a Class X felony.
In December 2020, 43-year-old Joshua A. Doss was going through a divorce and had been prohibited by court order from entering his marital home in the 3100 block of Merrywell Court in Carpentersville. Despite the restriction, on December 28, 2020, Doss entered the home and found his estranged wife and the victim.
Doss, armed with a knife, pushed past his wife and lunged at the victim, stabbing him in the chest area and forearm, after which the victim and the wife fled the residence. Police found the defendant in the master bedroom of the home, at which point he was taken into custody.
The victim spent five days in the hospital after undergoing surgery to the knife wounds.
“Mr. Doss’ actions turned an emotional situation into an unnecessary, violent and bloody one,” said Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Kelly M. Orland. “Given the severity of his injuries, the victim is lucky to be alive.”
In accordance with Illinois law, Doss must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence. He receives credit for 923 days served in the Kane County jail, where he had been held since his arrest in lieu of $500,000 bail.
Judge John Barsanti accepted the plea.
