According to a press release from the Batavia Police Department, a bicyclist was hit by an SUV at the intersection of South Batavia Avenue and Union Avenue in Batavia this afternoon.
The bicyclist is in hospital in critical condition.
Police are investigating the crash which occurred on at 2:29 PM Wednesday afternoon. The preliminary investigation revealed that a newer model GMC Denali was southbound on S. Batavia Avenue when it struck a bicyclist in the intersection. The bicyclist was westbound Union Avenue within the crosswalk riding across South Batavia Avenue. Batavia Avenue was shut down to vehicular traffic between Morton Street and Main Street for the ensuing investigation.
The occupant inside of the vehicle was not injured during the incident. The bicyclist, a teenage boy, sustained critical injuries and was transported to an area hospital for medical care.
No additional information related to the crash investigation is being released at this time as the investigation is in progress. The Batavia Police Department is being assisted in this investigation by the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team.
