A car-jacking turned into a deadly car chase down Randall Road this afternoon as police chased the offender from South Elgin to Geneva, where he left the vehicle, opened fire on police and was subsequently shot and killed.
A Kane County Sheriff’s K9 officer. a Dutch Shephard named Hudson, was also killed while attempting to subdue the offender. Hudson was a 6-year veteran of the force.
During a press conference, Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain explained that authorities were made aware of a vehicle that had been carjacked earlier in the day. The vehicle was identified via its license plate in South Elgin, where police attempted to pull the vehicle over. Upon seeing the police lights, the offender sped away southbound on Randall, followed by police.
The vehicle was stopped by police at the intersection of Randall and Fabyan Parkway in Geneva. The offender left the stolen vehicle while the Geneva K9 officer was released. The offender then pulled a handgun, at which point deputies opened fire. The K9 officer was killed in the exchange.
Theoffender was later pronounced deceased at Delnor Hospital.
No other police officers suffered injuries during the incident.
Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser indicated that the identify of the offender will await the completion of an independent investigation required in officer-involved shooting deaths.
The intersection was closed down around 3:30 p.m. and is expected to remain shut down into the evening May 24.
Police have closed traffic on Randall Road from Mill Street in Batavia to Gleneagle Drive in Geneva and on Fabyan Parkway from Bent Tree Drive to the Fabyan Crossing shopping center.
Traffic delays are extensive, and motorists should avoid the area.
