Cantigny Golf, owned by the Chicago-based Robert R. McCormick Foundation and managed by KemperSports (Northbrook, Ill.), is located on the former estate of Robert R. McCormick in Wheaton, Ill. It is widely regarded as one of the finest public golf destinations in the Midwest.
Cantigny is best known for its 27 challenging and scenic holes. When play began in 1989 Cantigny was named “Best New Public Course in America” by Golf Digest. Since then it has been recognized as a “Top 100 Public Course” and hosted many prestigious tournaments including the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in 2007. The Illinois State Amateur Championship has been contested at Cantigny five times, most recently in 2019.
Designed by Roger Packard, Cantigny’s Woodside, Lakeside and Hillside nines weave their way through native oak, maple and hickory trees, over and around lakes and streams. The signature hole is Lakeside No. 9, named “Dick Tracy” after the fairway bunker that resembles the famous comic strip character. The unique bunker is one of several features on the course that that pay homage to Colonel McCormick, the long-time editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune. He died in 1955 and designated his 500-acre Cantigny estate as a gift to the community.
Cantigny is further distinguished by the Cantigny Golf Academy. Opened in 2008, the Academy is the region’s first year-round practice and learning center of its kind. It offers all the essential components of golf performance under one roof, including climate-controlled hitting bays, expert club fitting and professional golf fitness training. The Academy welcomes beginners and expert players alike.
Cantigny also is known for its robust junior golf program for ages 5 to 18. Kids even have their very own 9-hole golf course and clubhouse at the Cantigny Youth Links, which opened in 1999. Many young players go on to become caddies at Cantigny, helping to enhance the golf experience for our customers as they increase their own knowledge of the game and learn important life skills to benefit their personal development. To date, 17 Cantigny Golf caddies have earned Evans Scholarships.
Golfers and non-golfers enjoy full access to the elegant and spacious Cantigny Golf clubhouse. The golf shop features a wide selection of top-quality clothing and equipment. Meals are served in two excellent venues—the Red Oak Room for banquets and brunches, and the casual Fareways Grill. Each offers outstanding cuisine complemented by panoramic views of the golf course and Swan Lake.
