A 59-year-old West Chicago man was killed Tuesday morning after he stopped to help a goose off the road on St. Charles Street/Route 25 in Elgin Township.
According to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Rateb Arqan pulled over on the side of the road at 1200 St. Charles Street at about 6am to help remove a goose from the southbound lanes of traffic.
As he was moving the bird, a southbound Chevrolet Express Van driven by Juan Padilla-Regalado of Elgin, 29, struck him.
Arqan was pronounced dead at the scene. Padilla-Regalado was treated at the scene and released, officials said.
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, and no citations have been issued at this time.
The investigation is still ongoing by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office investigations Division and Kane County Drone Team.
