A 24-year-old West Chicago woman was hospitalized in critical condition after being rescued from a submerged vehicle following a traffic accident along Bilter Road in Aurora.

The crash happened around 7pm Monday evening on Bilter Road just west of DuPage Parkway. Details of the cause have not made available by Aurora police, but the incident resulted in one vehicle submerged in a pond north of Bilter, with the other vehicle coming to a rest after striking a tree, also north of Bilter.

The driver of the submerged vehicle, a 23-year-old Aurora man, was able to exit the vehicle and swim to shore. His passenger, however, could not escape.

Attempts by Aurora police officers to extricate the woman from the vehicle were unsuccessful. However, upon the arrival of the Water Rescue Team, the woman was safely removed and transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the second vehicle was identified as a 45-year-old Aurora man.

Both drivers were transported to hospital in stable condition after being treated at the scene.

The four Aurora police officers who entered the water were also taken to hospital for evaluation, but neither the officers, assisting firemen nor the members of the Water Rescue Team were injured.

The crash remains under investigation by the APD Trafiic Division. Anyone with any information about the crash is requested to contact APD at 630-256-5330.
