A Batavia man wielding scissors and threatening to kill himself was subdued by Kane County Sheriff’s officers at the Kane County Public Defender’s Office at the Kane County Judicial Center Wednesday morning.
At approximately 9:21am, the KCSO was dispatched to the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles Township for a man armed with a weapon. Upon arrival, officers found the man had a pair of scissors to his throat, threatening to harm himself.
After de-escalation tactics were unsuccessfully employed, several commands were given for the male to drop the scissors. He did not comply. Ultimately, to ensure the safety of all staff present and officers involved, the male was tased and taken in to custody.
Medical attention was rendered on scene and the male was subsequently taken by ambulance to Delnor Community Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. No courthouse staff members or responding police personnel sustained injuries.
During the course of the investigation, it was found that the 20-year-old man had been at the Kane County Public Defender’s Office for a scheduled court appearance and learned that a warrant had been issued for his arrest from the Illinois Department of Corrections. He became distraught and grabbed a pair of scissors on a desk in the area, then threatened to harm himself.
The accused has been charged with the following:
- 1 count – Weapons – Possess Knife with Intent to Use in Specific Locations, Class 4 (Felony)
- 1 count – Carry or possess weapon in government building, Class A (Misdemeanor)
- 1 count – Disorderly Conduct – Breach the Peace, Class C (Misdemeanor)
- 1 count – reckless Conduct, Class A (Misdemeanor)
