Tammy Berke, the 55-year-old Batavia woman who died after being struck by a car in Geneva on the evening of September 29 near her place of work, is being deeply mourned by her co-workers.
Berke died after being struck by a car in the 700 block of East State Street (Route 38) in Geneva.
“We at Valley Animal Hospital are grieving,” Dr. Jennie Christakos of Valley Animal Hospital stated in an email. Valley Animal Hospital is located directly across the street from where Berke was fatally struck.
“The sudden loss of our beloved co-worker and friend, Tammy Berke, has been most difficult. We first met Tammy many years ago when she was contracted to clean our clinic after business hours.
“She did such a great job we hired her to work during the day as a Veterinary Assistant- she was a natural with animals. Tammy had a very strong work ethic and came to work every day with a smile on her face. She will be sorely missed at Valley Animal Hospital. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tammy’s family and friends.”
Berke was walking southbound near the center turn lane on State Street east of Sandholm Street across from the Dairy Queen to the north and Valley Animal Hospital to the south. She was struck by a black 2018 Hyundai Kona driven by a 30-year-old Geneva woman, who was traveling westbound on State Street.
Berke was transported to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva where she later died.
The driver was not injured and has been fully cooperating with the ongoing police investigation. She has been issued a traffic citation at this time for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
Further charges will be determined based on the results of the investigation.
