An undercover operation by Aurora Police Department’s Cadets last week resulted in identifying five Aurora businesses who sold alcohol or tobacco to minors.

APD’s cadets, who are all under the age of 21, went into different businesses and attempted to purchase alcohol or tobacco. Five of the businesses “carded” the cadets and were complying with the City of Aurora’s ordinances that required carding to prohibit the sale of alcohol or tobacco to minors.

The following businesses did not “card” the cadets and let them purchase alcohol or tobacco:

  • Uncle Stu’s Smoke and Vape, 2150 W Galena Blvd, Unit A1
  • Express Mobile Mart, 1030 N Lake Street
  • Papa Jay’s Smoke Shop, 1147 E New York St
  • La Villita Liquors, 1415 E New York St
  • Dr Lungzzz, 405 N Eola Rd, Unit M

After the unlawful sales were completed, Aurora Special Operations Group investigators entered the stores and issued the clerk a notice to appear for the unlawful sale of an alcoholic or tobacco product to a person under 21 years of age.

“The Aurora Police Department takes the sale of alcohol and tobacco to our youth seriously,” Aurora Police Special Operations Group Lieutenant Greg Spayth said. “It is important that we hold our local businesses accountable for checking someone’s identification to make sure they are of the age to purchase alcohol or tobacco. Operations like this allow us to make sure our local businesses are doing their duty to make sure they are complying with state and local laws.”
