An off-duty Illinois State Police Officer identified a man fleeing the scene of a shooting on Aurora’s east side Thursday, stopped his vehicle, then pursued him on foot until various police agencies ultimately took the suspect into custody.
At approximately 4:21PM on Thursday, Aurora Police Department officers were called to the 1000 block of N. Lake Street for a reported gunfire incident. When officers arrived on scene, a gunshot victim was located in a nearby lot suffering a gunshot wound to their abdomen and arm.
While this incident was occurring, an off-duty Illinois State Police Officer was in the area and observed the offender in the shooting flee the area in a vehicle. The ISP Officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle resulting in the offender fleeing on foot. In a combined effort with the Illinois State Police, Aurora Police Department’s Special Operation Group, and Aurora Police Department’s Bureau of Neighborhood Policing, the offender was taken into custody after a foot pursuit.
During the course of the preliminary investigation, detectives determined the individual taken into custody was involved in an altercation with the victim when the offender pulled a firearm out and shot the victim. The victim was transported to an area hospital and later flown to a Chicago hospital being listed in critical condition.
The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized the following felony charges against the male, 30-year-old Chicago suspect:
- 1 count of Attempted Murder
- 1 count of Armed Habitual
- 2 counts of Armed Violence
- 1 count of Aggravated Battery with a firearm
- 1 count of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon
- 1 count of Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance
