Shootings on interstate highways, which have plagued Chicago and surrounding communities in recent years, have moved westward.
At approximately 1:15 a.m. this morning, Illinois State Police Troopers responded to the scene of a reported shooting on I-88 near York Road in DuPage County.
According to ISP, a vehicle was fired upon while heading eastbound on I-88, resulting in the vehicle crashing.
Preliminary reports indicate the shots were fired from an unknown vehicle also traveling eastbound.
Troopers found an adult male passenger inside the victim vehicle with life-threatening injuries sustained from the gunfire. He was transported to an area hospital and later was pronounced deceased.
Another adult male sustained non-life-threatening injuries from gunfire and was driven to an area hospital for treatment. Two other occupants, an adult male and an adult female, were in the victim vehicle at the time of the shooting and were treated for non-life-threatening injuries sustained from the traffic crash.
The eastbound lanes of Interstate 88 were closed for the investigation. All lanes were reopened at approximately 9:30 a.m. The events surrounding the shooting remain under investigation and no further information is available at this time.
