The City of Elgin has had a difficult record on the past few years when it comes to gunfire incidents. Last year, the city set a record with 66 such incidents, eclipsing the previous record of 64 set in 2016. This year to date, the city has experienced incidents at a slightly lower rate, with 31 having been recorded as of July 18.
Yesterday, the Elgin Police Department announced some progress.
On April 10, 2022, at 5:19 a.m., officers responded to the 1600 block of Maple Ln for a report of shots fired. On May 31, 2022 at 1:27 a.m., officers responded to the 700 block of Hastings for a similar report. In both instances, police confirmed that gunfire incidents had occurred. No injuries or property damage were reported.
After investigating the incidents, and after a review of the facts of the cases by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, two 18-year-old men, both from Elgin, have been charged with one count of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 1 felony).
One of the men is currently being held with no bond in Cook County jail on a separate Elgin case. The other appeared in Kane County bond call this Monday where the Judge set his bond at $100,000 (10% to apply).
Both cases remain under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the Elgin Police Department’s Major Investigations Division at 847-289-2600.
