Early Monday morning, a Polaris ATV with two riders crashed into a mailbox and then a tree near Huntley, killing one and sending one to the the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

On July 4th at approximately 12:45 AM, Kane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 18N800 block of Ridgefield Blvd. in unincorporated Rutland Township for an ATV crash with injuries.

The initial investigation indicates that the Polaris ATV had two riders and was traveling north on Ridgefield Blvd. and left the roadway for an unknown reason striking a mailbox in the 18N800 block of Ridgefield Blvd.  The ATV continued north and struck a tree on the property.

Both riders were transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries.  The driver, identified as 24-year-old Elpido Marcelo of Huntley, was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.  The passenger, a 21-year-old female from Kenosha, WI, remains in the hospital being treated for life-threatening injuries.  It appears that neither rider was wearing a helmet.

Kane County Sheriff’s Detectives are continuing to investigate the crash and it is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash and no citations have been issued at this time.

If you have any information about the crash, please contact the Investigations Division at 630-444-1103.
