After the horrifying mass shooting in Highland Park Monday morning, many municipalities decided to cancel fireworks, while other went on with the celebrations. Here in the Fox Valley, two of the largest displays, those in Elgin and St. Charles, were cancelled, while those in Aurora and Batavia went on (with heightened security measures).
The reasons given for cancellation included showing solidarity with the victims of Highland Park and basic security. (Elgin also cited weather.)
