Early Wednesday afternoon, an Elgin man was killed when his Toyota Camry struck a semi truck on Route 31 north of McLean Blvd. in unincorporated St. Charles.
At approximately 2:00pm the South Elgin and Countryside Fire Protection District was dispatched to a report of a traffic crash with injuries on Rt. 31 north of McLean Blvd. in unincorporated St Charles Township.
South Elgin Police arrived on the scene first and found a man entrapped in his vehicle. Additional resources were called in and the man, who was unresponsive at the time, was extricated from the vehicle and transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elgin. He was later pronounced deceased. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The initial investigation indicated that a Toyota Camry was traveling north on Rt. 31 and for an unknown reason crossed the center line and struck a Peterbilt semi that was traveling south on Rt 31. The collision resulted in the Toyota being pushed back approximately 100 feet, where it ended up resting against two trees.
The driver of the semi, a 68-year-old male of Wisconsin was uninjured. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
