On Monday evening, a Yorkville police officer shot and killed a man being treated by EMS personnel in his home after allegedly becoming “uncooperative” and brandishing a gun.

At approximately 8:37pm Monday evening, Bristol Kendall EMS and Yorkville police responded to a residence in the 200 block of Leisure Street in Yorkville regarding a medical call. Within a few minutes, both Police and Fire personnel were on scene.

During this call for service, the individual being treated became uncooperative. Preliminary information is that the adult male produced a handgun and, fearing for his own safety and the safety of other occupants inside the home, the officer shot the suspect at approximately 8:50 pm.

The officer and paramedics already on scene rendered aid, however the male succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

No officers, medical personnel or other occupants were injured during the incident.

The Officer who shot the suspect is a male with two years of experience in the Yorkville Police Department, and has not been involved in any Officer Involved Shooting incidents previously. Pursuant to policy, the officer has been placed on administrative duty.

The name of the deceased is being withheld at this time while family is being notified.

The Yorkville Police Department has requested that the incident be investigated by the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation pursuant to the State of Illinois’ Police and Community Relations Improvement Act. The Yorkville Police Department is fully cooperating with the Illinois State Police as they conduct their investigation.

Any inquiries regarding this investigation should be directed to the Illinois State Police Public Information Office.
