This Saturday and Sunday the Elgin Symphony Orchestra will celebrate the Eternal City with a program of Rome-inspired works culminating with Ottorino Respighi’s “Pines of Rome.”

    Concert Program

    Tania Miller, conductor
    Sara Davis Buechner, piano

    Tchaikovsky: Capriccio italien, op.45
Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, op.43
    Miller: Under Sea, Above Sky
Respighi: Pini di Roma (Pines of Rome)

    Saturday, October 2: 7:30pm

    Sunday, October 3: 3:00pm

Canadian Conductor Tania Miller has distinguished herself as a dynamic interpreter, musician and innovator. On the podium, Maestra Miller projects authority, dynamism and sheer love of the experience of making music. As one critic put it, she delivers “calm intensity . . . expressive, colourful and full of life . . . her experience and charisma are audible.” Others call her performances “technically immaculate, vivid and stirring”.

Noted for her musical command, cosmopolitan artistry, and visionary independence, Sara Davis Buechner is one of the most original concert pianists of our time. Lauded for her “intelligence, integrity and all-encompassing technical prowess” (New York Times), “thoughtful artistry in the full service of music” (Washington Post), and “astounding virtuosity” (Philippine Star), Japan’s InTune magazine sums up: “Buechner has no superior.”

In her twenties Ms. Buechner earned a bouquet of top prizes at the world’s premiere international piano competitions — Queen Elisabeth (Brussels), Leeds, Mozart (Salzburg), Beethoven (Vienna), and Sydney. She was a Bronze Medalist of the 1986 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and the Gold Medalist of the 1984 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition.

Ms. Buechner has performed in every state and province of North America — as recitalist, chamber musician and soloist with top orchestras like the New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony and Philadelphia Orchestra; and in venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and the Hollywood Bowl. She has toured throughout Latin and South America and Europe, and she enjoys a special following in Asia.

The performance will be held at the Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way in Elgin. Tickets range from $35-$65, with $10 Youth tickets on the Main Floor and Balcony, and can be purchased here.

    More information is available here.

Note: Proof of COVID vaccination will be required to attend, and masks must be worn at all times within the theatre.
