On Nov. 20, 2016, Latawn Coon of Aurora went to the home of an acquaintance, who was not there. Coon entered the home without permission, went to the bedroom of a sleeping child and sexually assaulted her by force.

Another child was present in the bedroom.

Coon knew the victim, who was younger than 12 years old.

Kane County Judge David P. Kliment has found the 41-year-old Coon guilty of the offenses of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, Class X felony, and aggravated criminal sexual abuse, Class 2 felony.

“I’m proud of this survivor and her family for patiently awaiting justice in this 5-year-old case,” said Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Tyler Cox after the verdict was rendered. “Thanks to advocate Julie Pohlman and the rest of the staff at the Kane County Child Advocacy Center for their work on behalf of this child and her family.”

Coon waived his right to a jury trial.

Judge Kliment set Coon’s next court appearance for 1:30 p.m. Dec. 1, 2021, in Courtroom 305 at the Kane County Judicial Center for motions and sentencing. Coon faces a sentence of between 6 and 67 years’ imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

In addition to the prison term, Coon must register for life as a sexual offender in accordance with the Illinois Sexual Offender Registration Act.

Coon remains in custody at the Kane County jail. Judge Kliment revoked his bond upon conviction.
