A North Aurora Police Department officer shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at him and his fellow officers late Tuesday evening.
At 9:27 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of Pine Creek Drive after receiving calls about a male subject who was acting erratically. Upon arrival, nobody at the home answered the door although officers could hear people inside. The fiancé of the male, who called the police, arrived on scene and let officers into the home through the garage.
Once inside the home, officers were approached by a male subject who pointed a handgun at the officers. The man was later identified as 51-year-old James R. Wiesner. All three officers retreated from the home into the front yard. Wiesner followed the officers outside while still holding the handgun.
Officers attempted to take positions of cover, but Wiesner continued to advance and ignored all commands to drop the handgun. As Wiesner approached one of the officers in the street, the officer fired his duty weapon at Wiesner, striking him in the upper body.
All three officers on the scene administered first aid until the ambulance arrived. Wiesner was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
Per North Aurora Police Department policy, all three officers involved in this incident will be placed on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated by the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force Officer-Involved Death Team.
