This weekend brought more gunfire incidents to Elgin, a city already on a record pace for such events.
According to police reports, early Sunday morning, at approximately 1:31 a.m., Elgin police responded to the area of the 400 block of Jefferson Ave. for a report of shots fired.
Upon initial investigation, police found evidence of a shooting and related property damage. No injuries have been reported at this time.
On Saturday morning, at approximately 8:33 a.m., officers responded to the 400 block of W. Chicago for a report of a past shots fired incident. When officers arrived, information was obtained that sounds of gunfire were heard at 5:15 a.m. and at that time Elgin Police were not contacted. Upon further investigation officers located evidence of gunfire. No injuries or property damage have been reported.

The shootings are the 29th and 30th of the year in Elgin, and the ninth in May alone (April had 8 incidents). The city is on pace to experience approximately 76 shootings for the year given the current rate, an increase of 12, or 19%, over the the record year of 2016, which had 64 gunfire incidents.
It should be noted that gunfire this year has resulted in only 3 victims and 13 incidents of property damage, according to the city’s Gunfire Incidents Dashboard.
