Effective Thursday, May 13, all Kane County Health Department COVID-19 vaccination sites offering Pfizer vaccine will be open to ages 12 and up.
“Families are encouraged to receive their vaccines together so that all members are protected,” Kane County Health Department Interim Executive Director Kathy Fosser said.
On Monday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted emergency use authorization for the 12-to-15 age group. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to grant full approval on Wednesday, May 12.
Effective Thursday, Kane County vaccine sites will accept walk-ins for ages 12 years and up. A parent or guardian should accompany youth under age 18 – but if a parent or guardian is unable to attend, they can sign the consent form and allow another adult to accompany the minor. The consent form can be found online at KaneHealth.com and at KaneVax.org.
“Parents and guardians are encouraged to receive vaccination, if they have not had their COVID-19 shots yet,” said Michael Isaacson, LCHD assistant director of community health.
All Kane County vaccine sites offer free COVID-19 vaccines to eligible residents.

The use of COVID-19 vaccines is proving to be effective at keeping people out of the hospital.
“Since mid-March, 98% of the nearly 200 COVID-19 patients that have been admitted to Rush Copley were not fully vaccinated,” said John Diederich, president and CEO at Rush Copley Medical Center. “Only 2% of hospitalized patients were fully vaccinated, and there were no deaths from these rare, breakthrough cases. This is further evidence that the vaccine is working and is the best way to protect yourself, your family and our community.”
