Elgin History Museum’s Project 2-3-1 traveling exhibit on display in person and virtually at the Gail Borden Library

Celebrate Black History Month by learning the story of Elgin’s African American history. The Project 2-3-1 traveling exhibit is now on view at the Gail Borden Public Library (270 N. Grove Ave, Elgin, IL) or available as a virtual exhibit on the Library’s website. (gailborden.info) The documentary, Two Boxcars, Three Blocks, One City: A Story of Elgin’s African American Heritage is available in 3 parts on the Elgin History Museum’s YouTube channel. The 75-minute documentary contains extensive interviews, many never seen photos and in-depth histories that will bring to life the story of Elgin’s African American heritage. YouTube viewing is free with internet connection and can be live-streamed to schools, churches, and community organizations to start a discussion on African American history, social justice, and civil rights.

How Sweet It Is with Linda Rock
Virtual event February 11, 2021 at 7pm
Presented by Gail Borden Public Library.
Never outdone by Chicago’s candy producers, Elgin was a manufacturer of sweets and treats for many years. Historian Linda Rock presents the Elgin History Museum research on factory & home candy production. Virtually taste sweet treats from ice cream to popcorn stands and various candies made in Elgin.

Elgin History Museum now offering tours with a Spanish speaking guide on the third Saturday of every month.

In Person Event: February 20 11am & 1pm
Tour the Museum and explore Elgin’s rich history with a Spanish speaking guide! There are two floors of interactive exhibits to explore. Learn about the founding of Elgin, the Watch Factory, Elgin Road Races, and products Made in Elgin. Kids are welcome! Properly worn masks and social distancing is required.

African American Heroes and Sheroes presented by Linda Gorham
Virtual event February 21, 2021 at 2pm

By looking at her own family’s dreams and goals, Linda Gorham shares stories of African American men and women who broke color barriers and had noteworthy accomplishments — often in spite of difficult circumstances. Gorham incorporates story, music, photographs, personal narrative, quotes and historical facts to commemorate their achievements. For the past 30 years Linda Gorham has engaged audiences internationally with poignant and
humorous family stories; interactive folktales; notably twisted fairy tales; and riveting, well-researched historical stories. Each performance is infused with Linda’s unconventional humor and her signature ‘sophisticated attitude’.
