West Chicago Garden Club Recognized for Community Contributions

A recent meeting of the West Chicago Garden Club held at the Kruse House gardens combined the sweet fragrance of blooming flowers, the melodious sounds of a group of string musicians from West Chicago’s Community High School, a featured class in the art of creating a succulent planter and the fellowship of Garden Club members who welcomed several new people into the fold. The gathering, which took place on the third Thursday of May, was the perfect start to celebrate the onset of the blooming season for these garden enthusiasts.
Special guest City of West Chicago Alderman Lori Chassee was in attendance to recognize the efforts of Garden Club members for the many contributions the group makes to the quality of life in the community. Among the projects for which she praised the Club, the Blooming Fest plant sale and members’ devotion (including a monetary donation of $1,500) to the upkeep of the Kruse House gardens were highlighted.

“We thank the entire Club for the countless hours preparing for the plant sale, and the group of Garden Club members that work each week, yearlong weather-permitting, to make the Kruse House garden such a lovely place for our City,” said Alderman Chassee, who mentioned each of these members by name: Billie Childress, Kerry Perry, Angie Sadauskas, Keith Letsche, Jan Grismore, Barbara Darrah and Tom Fessler.
Membership to this friendly group of green thumbs is affordable at $15 per year or ($25 for multiple members of the same household) and comes with many perks including a fabulous schedule of presentations by professionals in a wide range of gardening topics, demonstrations, workshops, and field trips.

Current Garden Club President Barb Bizzarri, who is an active member of the City and Park District’s America in Bloom Committee, hopes the Club’s compelling schedule of upcoming programs which includes a terrarium presentation, a program on “Dividing Perennials” led by garden expert and columnist for the Chicago Tribune, and field trips to the Fabyan Japanese Garden and BAPS Hindu Temple, will entice more people to discover the joy of gardening.
