The St Charles Arts Council, in partnership with the St. Charles Park District announces the city-wide, all-arts event – ArtsFest, ALL of the ARTS, ALL over TOWN – running from Friday, September 6 through Sunday, September 15. The event is designed to showcase for residents and visitors the depth and breadth of those who create and support the arts in our community. We invite everyone to enjoy programming that is brand new for the event, as well as events and places they have enjoyed for years.
The 9th Annual ArtsFest | St. Charles features multiple artistic disciplines in venues all over the city including art galleries, music, poetry, and live theater. NEW to the event this year is a Kick-Off Party co-hosted by the St Charles Arts Council and St. Charles History Museum at the Museum on Thursday, September 5 from 5-7 pm, the evening prior to ArtsFest. The general public and participating venues are invited to attend to help celebrate the arts, connect and socialize with other art-goers, and learn about the programs and events that will be offered as part of ArtsFest. The Party will also be the official reception for “Synapses 4: community” a site-specific installation by local artist Rita Grendze. Grendze has been developing a body of work from her home studio that explores pathways and systems through the medium of woven, three-dimensional drawings. This next iteration in the “Synapse” series asks: what are the pathways, the systems, that foster a true community?
Back from last year are the ArtsFest Gallery Crawl and Poetry Crawl. The Poetry Crawl features poems chosen to be displayed in businesses throughout downtown St. Charles, including Breadsmith, The Diamondaire, 116 Gallery, Kilwins, Brunch Café, Kava Diem, Smitty’s on the Corner, Townhouse Books, and SIP Parties. To honor the City’s 185th Anniversary, we’ve asked poets to write on the subject of St. Charles. Poets interested in participating in the event should email their poem to firstname.lastname@example.org with a brief bio by August 9. Visit http://www.stcharlesartscouncil.org/calls-to-artists/ for more info about the Call to Poets.
The returning Gallery Crawl includes NINE art galleries/exhibitions operating during the event, including the SCAC’s latest ArtsFest Pop-Up Gallery and the Norris Cultural Arts Center’s signature Vicinity Show, as well as the Park District’s Sculpture Exhibition. New shows will be up at 116 Gallery, Fine Line Creative Arts Center, Kava Diem, and Steel Beam Theatre Gallery. The St. Charles Public Library will also have an exhibit in their Mezzanine Gallery that celebrates the City’s 185 years through photos. As always, there’s also a wealth of public art to be taken in throughout St. Charles, in addition to Rita Grendze’s newest temporary installation at the St. Charles History Museum. The best way to view public art? Download the Otocast app and find the SCAC’s Art in Public Places Art Tour for a guided tour of public art across St. Charles.
ArtsFest also features a fantastic array of performing arts programming. Marquee Youth Stage is back this year with an Open House and Drop-In Improv, and Steel Beam Theatre will be putting on its newest production “Broadway Gender Benders.” The St. Charles Business Alliance’s (formerly Downtown St. Charles Partnership’s) annual and awesome Jazz Weekend features Jazz in venues all over town September 12 through 15. Visit their web site downtownstcharles.org/dscp_events/stc-jazz-weekend/ for musician and venue details.
