Recreational Cannabis Public Hearing Continued at Oct. 8 Plan Commission Meeting

A public hearing regarding zoning for recreational cannabis sales in St. Charles was held September  17, 2019, by the Plan Commission. The Plan Commission received testimony from the public and continued the hearing to the Oct. 8, 2019, Plan Commission Meeting, at 7 p.m., in City Council Chambers, 2 E. Main Street. Aldermen voted 6-3 at the Aug. 19, 2019, Government Operations Committee Meeting to direct City staff to begin the process of amending the City’s zoning ordinance to allow two recreational sales facilities: one on the east side of St. Charles and one on the west side.

The Plan Commission is a recommending body. Any recommendations from the Plan Commission will be considered at a future meeting of the Planning and Development Committee of the City Council. Upon recommendation from Planning & Development Committee, the City Council will make a final decision.

The possession and private consumption of cannabis by people 21 or older for recreational use will be legal in Illinois beginning Jan. 1, 2020. However, municipalities may choose whether or not to allow retail cannabis stores in their communities, and if so, how many stores are allowed, and where they can be located.
