As a hairstylist who started in the beauty industry over 30 years ago I have seen many changes in our industry. None of which come has come close to how social media has affected our careers.
I found this a great opportunity to educate our clients on the reality of what it takes to recreate some of the new trends.
#1. Grey/Ashy hair color….Really hot on all social media platforms.
When you see this process on social media you are unlikely seeing the entire process that it taking to create that look. Some of the famous “influencers” see only 1 client a day at starting rate of $1000.00. If your hair is dark brown or has existing hair color it will more than likely take more than 1 bleach application to remove all your nature, and existing hair color. This process will most certainly damage the integrity of your hair. As an experienced stylist I would not recommend this. I would suggest a treatment program to rebuild your hair before another lighting process. Your hair will have to be lightened slowing moving through the warm/ gold/ brassy stages before it ever becomes white enough to reflect the tone of grey, purple, blush, or any fashion color.
Always let your stylist know when scheduling your appointment if you are looking for a dramatically different look so they are able to discuss the process, and schedule enough time to create your desired result.
This is just one of many examples of how social media has affected our careers. Not everything is as it “appears” when it comes to the beauty trends you see on social media.
Always consult and trust your stylist for a reality check. We know the truth behind the scenes social media.
