Brendan Brisson Makes Chicago Steel History

Brisson becomes first forward in team history selected in the first round of the NHL Draft

2019-2020 Chicago Steel forward and USHL Rookie of the Year Brendan Brisson was selected with the 29th overall pick of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night, the first Steel forward ever taken in the first round.

Brisson becomes the third player in Steel history to be selected in the first round of the NHL Draft, joining defensemen Jamie Oleksiak, who was selected 14th overall in the 2011 NHL Draft by the Dallas Stars, and John Moore, who was selected 21st overall in the 2009 NHL Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Brisson, a Manhattan Beach, Calif. Native, was awarded the USHL Rookie of the Year award after recording 59 points (24G, 35A), the second-most in the league during the 2019-2020 campaign.

Following his exceptional season with the Steel, Brisson is preparing to play the 2020-2021 season with the University of Michigan.

“The Golden Knights are getting a player that first of all, is a great person, that loves to be at the rink and is always looking to add different elements to his game, always looking to get better,” said Steel Head Coach Brock Sheahan. “Brendan has high-end skill and can make plays at speed and is comfortable playing inside of contact. He makes players around him better and can also score in a variety of ways.”

The Steel have 12 players with ties to the organization remaining on the draft-eligible list as the draft continues on Wednesday.

“Tomorrow is setting up to be an exciting one for our organization,” said Steel General Manager Ryan Hardy. “I don’t anticipate Sam Colangelo, Sean Farrell, and Ian Moore having to wait too long to hear their names called in the morning and I expect us to go on a run in the later rounds with potentially a handful of other selections.”

Rounds 2-7 of the 2020 NHL Draft are scheduled to begin at 10:30 am CT on Wednesday, broadcast on NHL Network.
