A Chicago man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after being convicted of armed violence and illegal possession of fentanyl and fentanyl-laced heroin.

On December 11, 2025, a jury convicted 40-year-old Cory L. Alexander of two counts each of Armed Violence and Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver, both Class X felonies.

According to prosecutors, on November 20, 2017, Alexander was the driver of a rental car stopped by Illinois State Police on Interstate 90. Alexander possessed a loaded pistol under the driver’s seat and multiple bags of illegal drugs in the trunk, including more than 450 grams of cannabis; more than 49 grams of fentanyl; and more than 25 grams of heroin mixed with fentanyl. Alexander was on parole in Wisconsin at the time for a 2010 case for Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Distribute.

“This defendant was engaged in distributing large quantities of highly dangerous drugs, including fentanyl, Assistant State’s Attorney Jake G. Matekaitis said. “He is a felon who illegally armed himself with a loaded pistol as he preyed on people’s addictions. He is a danger to the community, and he will spend many years behind bars where he belongs. This lengthy prison sentence reflects the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office’s commitment to removing fentanyl and other dangerous drugs, as well as illegally possessed firearms, from our community.”
