A driver was hospitalized and an Illinois State Police (ISP) squad car was damaged on I-88 near Naperville Thursday when the driver’s vehicle struck the squad car during a traffic crash investigation.

At approximately 7:34pm on Thursday, an ISP Trooper was pulled over on the left shoulder of I-88 eastbound near Naperville with his emergency lights activated investigating a single vehicle rollover crash. A Tollway Maintenance truck was positioned behind the ISP squad car assisting with recovery of the crashed vehicle. A passing black Acura failed to slow down while negotiating a curve and spun out, striking both the Tollway Maintenance truck’s towed unit and the passenger side of the Trooper’s squad car.

Both vehicles sustained minor damage. The Trooper and Tollway Maintenance driver were each inside of their vehicles at the time of the crash, but reported no injuries. The driver of the Acura was transported to an area hospital with injuries and was issued several traffic citations, including a Scott’s Law citation. The investigation is ongoing.

In 2026, ISP has suffered 2 Move Over Law-related crashes, while in in 2025, ISP reported 14 Move Over Law-related crashes with seven Troopers injured. The Move Over Law, also known as “Scott’s Law” in Illinois, requires all drivers to move over when approaching an emergency vehicle or any vehicle with its emergency or hazard lights activated.

Violators face fines of no less than $250 and no more than $10,000 for a first offense. If the violation results in injury to another person, the violator’s driver’s license will be suspended for a mandatory period of anywhere between six months and two years.
