An alcohol-fueled argument that escalated to an slashing attack with a carving knife has left a 67-year-old St. Charles man behind bars for 10 years.

Last June, Randy L. Wilson, of the 1400 block of South 14th Street in St. Charles, was outside of his apartment complex speaking with another man when things got out of control.

Wilson and the man began to argue and things got physical. Wilson, who had been drinking, went into his home and returned with a 12-inch carving knife. Wilson lunged at the victim and slashed his throat, leaving a 4-inch gash and causing severe bleeding.

Yesterday, Wilson agreed to a sentence of 10 years of imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections in exchange for a guilty plea to the offense of armed violence, Class X felony.

“These men were friends at the time of this violent and inexplicable attack,” said Assistant State’s Attorney Jessica Michels. “They also had been drinking alcohol, which seems to be the only explanation for Mr. Wilson’s bizarre overreaction. I am grateful the victim’s injuries weren’t worse. Thanks to the St. Charles Police Department for acting quickly to get medical attention to the victim, and for the thorough investigation.”

In accordance with Illinois law, Wilson must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence. He receives credit for 277 days served in the Kane County jail.
