An 18 year-old male from Elgin has been charged with 7 different felony crimes in relation to his involvement in an early morning shooting in Elgin this past Sunday.
The man, who prosecutors allege shot his 9mm handgun multiple times during a fight involving himself, four of his companions and the victim, was charged with the following felonies:
- Aggravated battery with a firearm, Class X felony
- Armed violence, Class X felony
- Aggravated discharge of a firearm, Class 1 felony
- Reckless discharge of a firearm, Class 4 felony, 2 counts
- Aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, Class 4 felony
- Unlawful use of a firearm without Firearm Owners Identification, Class 4 felony
- Mob action, Class 4 felony
Two other Elgin men, both 19, and two women, ages 19 and 20, have been charged with mob action, a Class 4 felony.
Prosecutors allege that during early the morning of Jan. 23, 2022, after an argument, the four men met the victim at a residence on Eagle Road in Elgin to fight. During the fight, Canales fired a 9mm handgun twice into the ground, struck the victim in the face multiple times with the handgun, and then fired the handgun a third time, striking the victim in the abdomen. In addition, a bullet fragment ricocheted and struck one of the co-defendants.
The victim remains hospitalized.
“These incidents will not be tolerated in our community, and we will ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” Elgin Police Chief Ana Lalley said in a press release. “The incredible professionalism, dedication and knowledge displayed by members of the department is what brought swift closure to this case.”
The quintet appeared yesterday in Kane County bond court. Kane County Judge Julia Yetter set the alleged shooter’s bail at $300,000, with 10 percent ($30,000) to apply for bond. His next court appearance for 9 a.m. Feb. 9, 2022, in Courtroom 211 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
The two other men had bail set at $30,000 ($3,000 to apply for bond), while the two women had bail set at $7,500 ($750) and were released upon their promise to return to court on their appointed appearance date.
