A 33-year-old Aurora man is in custody charged with numerous felony drug charges after police, while investigting a residential burglary at his residence, discovered thousands of pills, cocaine, cannabis, and other controlled substances in plain view in his apartment.
According to police, last Thursday at approximately 5:14pm APD officers responded to the 400 block of South Lincoln Avenue for a reported residential burglary in progress. Witnesses reported seeing two individuals enter the residence and leave with several bags before fleeing in a vehicle.
Officers observed signs of forced entry and conducted a protective sweep of the residence to determine whether anyone remained inside or needed assistance. During that sweep, officers observed a large bag containing suspected cannabis, along with numerous pills, in plain view. Based on those observations, officers secured the residence and contacted investigators with the department's Special Operations Group (SOG), who subsequently obtained a search warrant to further investigate the suspected illegal drug activity.
During the investigation, the resident returned to the property and was later taken into custody for obstructing a peace officer. Officers also recovered suspected controlled substances from his person.
At approximately 8:50pm, SOG investigators executed the search warrant and recovered the following (weights are approximated):
- Approximately 1,066.49 grams of suspected cannabis
- Approximately 28.05 grams of suspected cocaine
- Approximately 15.51 grams of suspected crack cocaine
- Approximately4.27 grams of suspected MDMA (Ecstasy)
- 4,886 suspected amphetamine pills (Adderall)
- 76.25 suspected alprazolam pills (Xanax)
- 266.5 assorted pills
- $2,624 in U.S. currency
Investigators also recovered digital scales and packaging materials.
The suspect has been charged with Manufacture or Delivery of a Controlled Substance, a Class X Felony (2 counts); Possession of a Controlled Substance , a Class 1 Felony (2 counts); Manufacture or Delivery of Cannabis , a Class 2 Felony (1 count); Possession of Cannabis, a Class 3 Felony (1 count); and Possession of a Controlled Substance, a Class 4 Felony (1 count).
The suspect remains in custody at the Kane County Adult Justice Center, with his next court date scheduled for October 22.
“This investigation is a good example of how our officers remain alert to criminal activity beyond the initial call for service,” said Aurora Police Chief Matt Thomas. “What began as a response to a reported burglary led to the recovery of a significant quantity of suspected illegal drugs, including thousands of pills. This seizure represents drugs that are no longer available for distribution in our community, and that's an important part of our ongoing efforts to keep Aurora safe.”
