An Aurora man has been charged with multiple DUI-related felonies after his pick-up truck slammed into a Hyundai Saturday night, killing the 23-year-old female driver.

According to police, at approximately 10:49pm Aurora police officers and firefighters responded to the intersection of Church Road and Butterfield Road for a report of a crash involving a Hyundai sedan and a Toyota pickup truck. Upon arrival, emergency personnel located the drivers of both vehicles with serious injuries.

Aurora Fire Department paramedics transported the 23-year-old female driver of the Hyundai to Mercy Medical Center, where she was later pronounced deceased. The driver of the Toyota, a 30-year-old Aurora man, was transported to another local hospital for treatment of his injuries, where he remains in critical condition.

A preliminary investigation indicated the Hyundai was traveling westbound on Butterfield Road and attempting to turn left onto southbound Church Road when it was struck by an eastbound Toyota pickup truck.

The driver of the Toyota has been arrested and charged with Aggravated Driving Under the Influence Causing Death (a Class 2 felony) – 5 counts; Aggravated Driving Under the Influence – Third Violation (a Class 2 felony) – 5 counts; Reckless Homicide (a Class 3 felony) – 1 count; and Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon (a Class 4 felony) – 1 count.

“This is a tragic incident that has resulted in the loss of a young life, and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones,” said Aurora Police Chief Matt Thomas. “As our investigators continue working to determine the full circumstances surrounding this crash, it is an important reminder of the devastating consequences that can result when someone chooses to drive while impaired.”
