A 35-year-old Elgin man is in custody after allegedly tracking down his estranged wife to her temporary residence in Naperville and shooting through her car window, missing her by millimeters.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Chief of Police Jason Arres announced today that the suspect has been charged with one count of Attempt First Degree Murder (a Class X Felony), one count of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (a Class 1 Felony), one count of Aggravated Stalking (a Class 3 Felony) and one count of Misdemeanor Violation of an Order of Protection.
The suspect’s wife, the victim in this case, currently has an active domestic violence case and order of protection against him out of Kane County.
According to police, early Tuesday morning at approximately 3:32am, officers with the Naperville Police Department responded to a 911 call placed by the victim who, having moved out of the family home three months ago with their three children, was staying at a residence in Naperville. Allegedly, at approximately 3:05am, the victim went to her car, which was parked in the driveway of the residence, to leave for work. While at the driver’s side of the car, the suspect approached her holding a silver Kimber 9mm handgun in his hand and told her that she had to talk to him or he would shoot her.
Accordingly to the result of the investigation, after approximately thirty minutes a car drove by and the suspect lowered the gun, at which time the victim sat inside the driver’s seat of her car, placed the car into reverse, and began to slowly reverse. The suspect walked alongside the vehicle as the victim backed up, held up the gun and told her to stop driving and to listen to him. It is alleged that Ahmedyar then fired a shot at the victim. The bullet went through the top right side of the driver’s seat toward the passenger side, missing the victim by millimeters. After firing the weapon, the suspect fled the scene on foot at which time the victim called 911.
At approximately 4:13am, the Elgin Police Department apprehended the suspect as he pulled into his driveway in Elgin. Further investigation has indicated that the suspect had sent the victim a multitude of harassing and threatening texts.
Later that day, with the assistance of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit, Naperville police located the gun allegedly used by the suspect.
“Domestic violence is not a private family matter, it is a serious crime that if left unchecked, can escalate causing serious physical harm to the victim, up to and including death,” Berlin said. “While the victim in this case was forced to endure an extremely stressful situation allegedly at the hands of her husband, we are all extremely thankful that she was physically unharmed.”
The suspect’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 14, 2025, for arraignment in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.
