The revamped Cubs got an Opening Day victory by shutting out the Milwaukee Brewers 4-0 at Wrigley Field Thursday.
Starting pitcher Marcus Stroman pitched six scoreless innings and the Cubs’ newly-acquired superstar shortstop Dansby Swanson picked up his first RBI as a Cub, igniting a 4-run rally in the third inning with a single to right, driving in Miles Mastrobuoni from third base.
As Swanson rounded first, Brewer shortstop Willy Adames cut off the throw from right field to try to catch Swanson off first base, but Swanson dived back, and Adames’ throw missed wide. Hoerner, who ad gone first-to-third on the single, trotted home on the errant throw, putting the Cubs up 2-0. They scored twice more in the inning, and the pitching staff took it from there.
There is an air of anticipation in Wrigleyville heading into the season as the front office dramatically remade the lineup during the off-season, spending big money on free agents like Swanson and bringing back a core that showed promise in the second half of last season.
