Look, it’s all very nice that online publication World Atlas has selected the Fox Valley’s own Geneva as one of its Top 7 Small Towns in Illinois for a Weekend Getaway. We thank them, and couldn’t agree more.
However, one gets the sense that the writers at World Atlas haven’t actually been here.
Here’s the description offered by the publication, in its entirety:
“Geneva, a lovely town with a quaint downtown and picturesque riverside, is in the center of the Fox River Valley. The Fox River Trail and the Fabyan Forest Preserve are only two of the parks and environmental areas in the town.
“The Geneva Island Park, which provides excellent swimming and boating options, is one of the city’s major attractions. A trip along the town’s Riverwalk, which gives stunning views of the Fox River, is another option for tourists. Geneva has a number of art galleries and museums, including the Geneva History Museum and the Fabyan Villa Museum & Japanese Garden, in addition to its outdoor activities. At one of the town’s many eateries and cafes, visitors can also sample regional food.”
Ok as far as it goes. But honestly, is Geneva primarily about “outdoor activities?” No mention of historic 3rd Street? Can one actually describe Geneva without that? No mention of the festivals, including the grandaddy of Illinois festivals, Swedish Days? And sorry, what is this “regional food” they speak of? Geneva’s dining is diverse, eclectic and magnificent. It is not “regional food.”
And let’s not forget hi-quality minor league sports – the Kane County Cougars and Chicago Steel.
Sure, we of all folks understand the concept of space constraints (even though it is digital). And again, we’re grateful Geneva was included. But, come on…
