A DeKalb man is in custody after leading police on a late-night, multi-county car chase down I-88 early Friday morning.

On Thursday evening at 8:46 PM, the DeKalb Police Department was notified about a male, later identified as 34-year-old Deaundre Brooks of DeKalb, who had been dropped off at Northwestern Medicine-Kishwaukee Hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Due to the life-threatening nature of his injuries, he was airlifted to a Rockford hospital where he subsequently died while receiving medical treatment.

The investigation by DeKalb police quickly led to the identification of a male suspect, who was placed under surveillance. Officers saw him enter a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the 800 block of Ridge Drive at 11:49 PM and attempted to stop the vehicle.

The suspect evaded capture and fled in his vehicle with DeKalb police in pursuit DeKalb police requested assistance with their pursuit east bound on I-88 approaching Rt. 47. At that point, Four Kane County Deputies joined in the pursuit to assist. One deputy was able to successfully spike the suspect’s tires at I-88 and Farnsworth Avenue. However, the vehicle continued on.

Deputies were able to catch up with the suspect vehicle near I-88 and Naperville Road. Another deputy successfully used his tire spikes at this location. The vehicle continued east bound and slowed down to about 50 mph near I-88 and Highland.

Deputies and Illinois State Police Troopers attempted to box in the car near the Highland exit, but the suspect was able to evade and continued east bound. A third deployment of tire spike strips was used at I88 and Finley Rd. Troopers conducted a “pit” maneuver on the vehicle which spun it into the middle concrete barrier on I-88, east of Highland. Troopers, Kane County Deputies, and DeKalb Police then safely took the suspect into custody at around 12:26 AM Friday morning.

The 40-year-old suspect has been charged with First Degree Murder; however, the case remains under investigation and additional charges against Hamilton are anticipated.
