A rash of so-called “ruse” burglaries in Elgin has prompted the Elgin Police Department to issue a warning to residents about fake utility workers.
Most recently, these crews have been asking to enter homes to check for issues with electricity and repair down wires.
According to EPD, there have been four such incidents and two attempts since January 26. All the incidents occurred between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
EPD reminds you that if you are approached by someone purporting to be a utility worker needing to enter your house, do not let them in without first contacting the utility, City, or the police. If ever in doubt, or if the person is persistent in entering your home, close and lock your door and call 9-1-1 immediately. Please report suspicious persons or activities when they are occurring as they may assist us later if a crime is reported.
Additionally, EPD’s Major Investigations Division is looking for assistance in identifying the subject and vehicle pictured below in connection with the ruse burglaries. Anyone having information regarding these types of incidents, or on identifying the subject, should call call 847-289-2600 or, to text a tip, send a message to 847411. Please include “ELGINPD” in the beginning of the text along with the message and/or tip information. Visit www.cityofelgin.org/crimetip for more crime tip options.
