In March of 2015, Enrique B. Jaquez forced his way into his former girlfriend’s Brighton Circle residence in Aurora and shot her current boyfriend in the back as he tried to escape, critically injuring the man.
The 43-yaer-old Jaquez will now likely spend the rest of his life in prison.
On Tuesday, Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie L. Mosser announced that Judge John A. Barsanti sentenced Jaquez to 67 years of imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
Jaquez was apprehended by law enforcement on September 22, 2018, when he attempted to re-enter the United States from Mexico.
In November, a jury found Jaquez guilty of the offenses of attempt first-degree murder – Class X felony, home invasion – Class X felony, aggravated battery – Class X felony, aggravated discharge of a firearm – Class 1 felony, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon – Class 2 felony.
The sentence is 31 years for the attempt first-degree murder, 31 years for the home invasion and five years for the aggravated unlawful use of a weapon for a total of 67 years. The terms are to be served consecutively. According to Illinois law, Jaquez must serve at least 85 percent of the 31-year sentences, and he is eligible for day-for-day credit on the five-year sentence. He receives credit for 1,596 days served in the Kane County jail.
“Mr. Jaquez is a danger to the community and belongs in prison,” Assistant State’s Attorney Jake Matekaitis commented. “This sentence holds him accountable for his violent behavior.”
