Update: New details are slowly emerging from yesterday’s police-involved shooting that left an Aurora man hospitalized in critical condition.

According to reporting from WGN News, the subject is a 21-year-old man who, according to his family, suffers from mental illness. According to the report, the man was shot four times in his driveway – in the leg, stomach, arm and eye.

According to an announcement posted last night, the Aurora Police Department is currently investigating an officer-involved shooting at a residence in the 900-block of Colorado Avenue.

Preliminary investigation shows officers were dispatched to the residence for a report of a subject armed with multiple knives and making threats towards people on scene.

When officers arrived on scene, they located the subject armed with knives. Officers attempted de-escalation tactics that were unsuccessful. The subject then charged an officer while still armed, at which point the officer shot the subject.

Officers immediately rendered aid until Aurora Fire Department medics arrived on scene. The subject was transported to an area hospital and is currently listed in critical condition.

Per policy, the officer involved in the shooting was transported to a local hospital and was later released.

In accordance with Illinois law, an independent agency is conducting the investigation. The Aurora Police Department has turned over this investigation to the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force.
