An 18-year-old male from Elgin has been indicted on DUI offenses related to a fatal crash in October that took the lives of two Campton Hills’ teenagers.
Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie L. Mosser and Sheriff Ron Hain announce that a grand jury has indicted the subject for the offenses of:
- Aggravated driving under the influence of drugs, Class 2 felony
- Reckless homicide, Class 3 felony
- Aggravated DUI, Class 4 felony
- Aggravated reckless driving, Class 4 felony
On October 31, 2022, the suspect was allegedly driving in excess of the posted speed limit in unincorporated Campton Township when his vehicle struck the rear of a Burlington Central School District 301 bus.
Grace Diewald, 20, of Campton Hills, and her brother, Emil Diewald, 19, passengers in his vehicle, were killed in the crash. A third passenger in the vehicle suffered severe injuries.
The accused was allegedly under the influence of marijuana. No one on the school bus reported injuries.
Judge Julia Yetter set bail at $100,000 with 10 percent ($10,000) to apply for bond. The accused’s next court appearance is scheduled for 9 a.m. on January 6, 2023, in Courtroom 305 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
The accused was released from custody on electronic home monitoring. While on EHM he is not to drive without a valid license, he may leave home only to go to work, attend medical, counseling or attorney appointments, and he must submit to random drug and alcohol testing.
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team conducted the investigation.
